When we lived in Baltimore, David worked with mentally handicapped adults. He worked personally with a gentleman for 7 years there. He and I both grew attached to him and became good friends with his mother. Before we moved, she asked that David and I take over as Robert’s Trustees when she passes. About two weeks ago Roberts mother passed away due to a Heart Attack. David went up to Baltimore and got Robert settled into emergency group housing because at the current moment Robert has a full time job working with a lawn care company that does the ground work for BWI Airport, has medical insurance and is setup in the MD State system for the mentally disabled. We figured it’d be best not to uproot any of that till we could get him established into the Florida State system.
We were notified last week by Roberts Case Worker for Disability Coordination in Maryland that she had contacted the agency here in Florida and had forwarded all of Robert’s records. So we thought that now we could move Robert down here…not so, we found out yesterday that the place we need to work with here in Florida is the Association for the Developmentally Disabled. They informed us that there is a waiting list with over 17,000 people on it awaiting services from the State of Florida. WTF? Are you kidding me?
The agency representative told us that it could take a very long time to get Robert any assistance, and that we should try to get with Social Service and Social Security to see what they can provide to Robert. I don’t know where or how to go about any of this, talk about stressful – UGH! Do we contact these places in Maryland where Robert is currently living before we move him or do we contact them here in Florida? Do we do any of this while he’s still there in Maryland or can we move him 1st? If we move him he’s got no medical benefits and no income? UGH!
Any guidance from the “FAMILY TREE” here would be appreciated, thanks guys.
